Chapter Twenty Seven:23 March 2005
Muriwai Again

Yesterday we went to Muriwai so that Rose and the boys could revel in it's splendor. They absolutely loved it - didn't want to leave, I had to tear their bodies out of there in order to get home to make dinner.

The tide was out! I finally got to explore that cave that's usually full of water because the tide has always been in while we've visited. We even climbed the steps that are chiselled in on the other side!

They loved the black sand - and discovered that Piha's sand is blacker today (so black it's purply they said).

The really sad thing about the cave at Muriwai was all of the damned graffiti. People think it's super cool to go in there and chisel their names into the rock. Thousands of names. Pat's was there. . . the boys had a laugh about that.

Other than that, I think they liked that some of the rock was pinky purple.

I loved how black the mussels looked in the sunshine. That poor lady and her kid were wondering what the heck I was doing since Rose tried to back out of this picture.

We couldn't climb down to get a good touchy feel of the sea stars because they were not in a safe area for us to do that.

We didn't bring towels, we didn't bring sunblock, we didn't bring a change of clothes and we didn't have any cold water.

They had to sit on their sweaters in the car, all three of them were soaked through. I had a hard time calling them out of the water. The waves were remarkably calm yesterday.

Since the boys recalled the dead fish picture from our previous Muriwai trip, they were pretty excited to see one and posed for this shot! EW

We got eaten alive at Piha today by some sort of mozzie sand flea things. I am not entirely certain what they were, but they were black and biting me all over. They're a little burnt out about going to the beach, but we should be heading to the Auckland Zoo tomorrow.

Take care, much love,

April
